Leeds Youth Opera offers young people in Leeds a unique opportunity to work with industry professionals on fully staged productions whilst learning about all forms of musical theatre in a nurturing environment.
Founded in 1971, LYO has been delighting audiences for over 40 years. The society performs two works per academic year, in February and July, with past shows ranging from Mozart classics and UK premières of works by Phillip Glass through to the more musical theatre style works of Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein.
LYO also perform in several concerts and special events throughout the year.
The artistic team is comprised of Anita Adams (Artistic Director) and Tom Newall (Musical Director), both professionals in their fields, who offer a wealth of experience combined with a passion for musical education.
Members are aged between 12 and 25 on joining, but existing members can stay with us until they are 29. Rehearsals are every Saturday and some Friday evenings in central Leeds. Exact times depend on the specific rehearsal schedule of the production. There are more rehearsals in the run up to performances; full schedules are sent out in advance.
LYO isn’t just for singers – we also cater for young people with an interest in all the other elements of staging a show, from playing in the orchestra to stage management, set construction to costume design.
Leeds Youth Opera is a registered charity (number 1139608) and limited company (Companies House Registration Number is 07302032) and is managed by a small but dedicated committee of trustees. LYO is one of over 20 City of Leeds Youth Music (CLYM) groups under the umbrella of ArtForms (part of Leeds City Council Children’s Services). The group is also a member of the Leeds Civic Arts Guild.
